How should we deal with a toxic boss

How should we deal with a toxic boss?

Have you ever felt this way? Waking up every morning not wanting to go to work, especially on Sunday nights when you can’t sleep, simply because the work environment is filled with stress and pressure?

In recent years, we've seen many cases of bullying or increasing stress in the workplace. As a psychiatrist, I can tell you that workplace stress comes in many forms, and it seems to be on the rise.

Problems with a boss can happen in many workplaces; in fact, it can be said that they exist in every workplace. Working with people always involves some level of conflict, which can arise from communication issues between the boss and employees, the boss's personal traits, or an unfair work system. But did you know that there are ways to handle these issues so that you can still work happily and maintain your mental health in the long run?

  1. Try honest communication

Sometimes, a boss may not realize how their actions affect us. Try talking to them using a method called "speaking with sincerity." Choose a time and place where both of you feel comfortable. For example, you could explain that you're feeling anxious because the workload is overwhelming at the moment. Polite and direct communication might help your boss understand and adjust their way of working with you. There may be many things the boss doesn't know, so it’s an opportunity to adjust together.

  2. Speak with a higher authority

If talking to your boss doesn’t work and you still can't resolve the issue, it may be beyond your control or authority. In this case, you can consult another boss or higher management to ask for advice or report the issue you’re facing. There might be a redistribution of resources or some changes in your work to help you cope better.

  3. Request a work break or leave

Sometimes, what you need most is a "break" to give yourself time to reflect. You can request unpaid leave or vacation days to rest, recharge, and figure out the best way to deal with the situation without forcing yourself too much. Using this time wisely will help you gain a clearer perspective and may open up new ways to solve the problem.

  4. Take care of your mental and physical health

And always listen to your heart to ensure that you have the strength to deal with problems calmly when faced with stress at work. The most important thing is to take care of yourself by organizing your work schedule and ensuring you have time to rest properly—don’t bring work home or continue working on weekends. Take time to relax, exercise, or do activities that help you unwind.

  5. Seek help from mental health professionals

If you've tried everything and still feel your emotions are unstable or you can't manage the stress, seeking help from a psychiatrist or mental health professional is another option. They can help you explore and learn ways to handle workplace problems effectively.

No one should have to suffer under a toxic boss, as we all have value and deserve respect. Try using the methods above to make small changes that can help you find happiness at work again.
